Remove Rust From A Table Saw

Posted on

– You see that? That's rust.

I don't even know how it got there.

But today's two-minute tool hack, I'm not only gonna showyou how to get rid of it, but I'm also gonna show you how to keep it off your saw for good.

Stay tuned.

The first thing I'm gonnado is take mineral spirits and scrub the whole thingdown with 400 grit sandpaper.

That'll get any corrosion or rust off of the table surface, out of the miter slots, and any previous waxy oroily coating that may have come from the factory, andwe're gonna remove all of it.

Following the 400 gritsandpaper, I'm gonna repeat the process with1,500 grit sandpaper and try and get anyscratches that might be on the surface out and bringit up to a nice polish.

The saw is clean and corrosion free now.

I have given it about 45minutes to completely evaporate any residue left overfrom the mineral spirits.

The next step is I'm gonna take this Meguair's Gold Class Carnauba Plus Wax.

I'm going to coat and buffthe entire top surface of the table saw, includingthe miter channels.

Now, my primary concern withany wax that I might put on this saw is that it mayleave a silicone residue on a work piece, which couldprevent me from being able to paint or stain orclear coat that work piece down the road.

So what I did is I testedthis on a piece of wood with some latex paint.

I applied it quite heavily.

I immediately applied thelatex paint right over top of the exact spot, andthis is the test piece.

Where the paint is is completelycoated with this product.

With the paint on top.

And as you can see, thereis absolutely no fish-eyeing or bubbling in this spot.

That leaves me fairly confidentthat I can use this product on this table surface, andI am not going to end up with a residue that isgoing to negatively affect my work pieces down the road so that I can't paint or stain them.

(upbeat music) Well, there you go, that wasyour two-minute tool hack.

I hope this was helpful.
